Pregnant Women Most Eating Artificial Sweeteners, Babies Can Be Obese

Artificial sweeteners are commonly used as additives in soft drink products, sweets, cakes and other desserts. For mothers who previously liked such products, it is advisable to limit it now, especially now that you are pregnant. When trying to maintain ideal body weight, one way we take is to prefer artificial sweeteners because they have no calories when compared to natural sugars that contain higher calories. But in fact, this could be the wrong step in certain conditions. People who drink diet soda have a heavier body weight than those who like regular soda. Experts are not entirely sure how that happened. It could be because the effect of artificial sweeteners can change our tastes for foods that are less sweet, for example fruit that becomes not too tasty for us. Or maybe it's also because our body's reaction in digesting chemicals in artificial sweeteners. Another possibility is that someone who chooses diet soda feels satisfied with his diet so he feels free to consume other calorie foods. However, whatever it is, there seems to be something in the artificial sweetener that is a problem factor.

A study involving more than 3,000 pregnant women found that those who consume artificial sweetened drinks tend to have babies weighing above normal. Some people might consider a fat baby to be cute and adorable, when in fact it is not healthy for babies. Obesity in infants can also adversely affect their health and well-being in subsequent developments because overweight babies tend to grow into fatter children and later become fatter adults too. Babies from mothers who routinely consume one or more artificial sweetened drinks during pregnancy are twice as likely to be overweight at 1 year of age.

Artificial Sweeteners Harmful to Pregnant Women

Types of calorie artificial sweeteners that must be limited by Mother, include:
  • Sugar in the form of sucrose, dextrosa, corn sugar (corn sugar), fructose, and maltose.
  • Alcohol sugar. This one substance is actually not sugar, but contains calories that can be converted into fat. Sugar alcohol is found in many foods or drinks labeled free of sugar. The substances that are meant by alcohol sugar are xylitol, sorbitol, isomalt, mannitol, and hydrogenated starch (hydrogenated starch).
Meanwhile, non-calorie artificial sweeteners that are considered safe for consumption during pregnancy, include:
  • Aspartame
  • Sucralosa
  • Rebaudiosida A (Stevia)
  • Potassium Aksesulfamat (Sunnet)
As a safer step, avoid foods and drinks as much as possible because they generally contain artificial sweeteners. It is far more healthy to make unsweetened foods and drinks at home in addition to increasing water intake as well. You are still allowed to consume soda or artificial sweet drinks once in a while, as long as your overall diet is healthy, such as eating lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and exercising regularly.
